    Altering land unit stats by doctrine? Empty Altering land unit stats by doctrine?

    Post  Karelian Sun Oct 25, 2009 8:42 pm

    Since we talked about this in the land doctrine thread, I thought to make a new topic for the actual stats. I haven't yet tested this in-game, but if this works we could model such things as the different sizes of German and Soviet armor battalions ech...While this sounds nice in theory, I have a few practical questions:
    First, could we start each land doctrine path with a single tech - already known once the game starts - that would modify unit stats according to the doctrine? Secondly, could such modifications be made later on as well, changing the ration of officers in Art-brigade from 32 to 36 for example? If the answer to both questions is yes, we could relatively easily create a land doctrine tech tree where each doctrine path has (in addition to the already envisioned yearly, repeatedly researcheable tech that affects combat events, organization and morale) reform techs that change unit stats according to historical changes just like HoI2 tech tree altered the IC costs of different units during the course of the game. These reforms could be scheduled to hit in historical intervals (Yearly Wartime Reforms 1939-41, Mid-War Reforms 1941-43, Late-War Reforms 1943-45)

    The actual way to achieve these changes would be the utilization of these already existing tech effects:
    Additionally I hope that commands such as maximum_attrition from medical techs could be tweaked (together with alterened toughness and defensiveness values) to simulate different types of infantry tactics so that players with yearly-war Large Front doctrine, for example, would really feel the full effect of using human wave assaults.

    Here are the tech effects I'm talking about
    }
    _brigade = {
    build_cost_manpower =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    officers =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    default_morale =
    }
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    default_organization =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    build_cost_ic =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    maximum_speed =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    transport_weight =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    supply_consumption =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    fuel_consumption =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    radio_strength =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    defensiveness =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    toughness =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    softness =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    air_defence =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    suppression =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    soft_attack =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    hard_attack =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    air_attack =
    }
    }
    _brigade = {
    combat_width =
    }
    }

    As for the unit stats themselves, I found a buch of good online sources and made some early background research on changing battalion structures of major powers. Here are some examples, the reform years go nicely along the old HoI2 yearly model changes.

    Grand Battle Plan Infantry Battalion 1936-1940
    Manpower: 668 + Officers 22 AA = LMGs on battalion level, AT = antitank rifle on company level

    Grand Battle Plan Infantry Battalion 1941-1942
    806 + 33 officers - AA = LMGs on company level, AT = antitank rifles in platoon level

    Grand Battle Plan Infantry Battalion 1942-1943
    782 - officers 36 AA = 20mm AA guns on battalion level AT = 2pdr AT-gun platoon on battalion level

    Grand Battle Plan Infantry Battalion 1943-1945
    845 officers 35 AA = similar to 1942 AT = 6prd AT-gun platoon on battalion level, PIATs on platoon level
    *************************************************************************************

    Grand Battle Plan Motorized Battalion 1940
    800, 26 officers AA=no designated AA AT = antitank rifles on squad level

    Grand Battle Plan Motorized Battalion 1942
    800, 36 officers - AA=LMGs on battalion level AT = 2pdr AT-gun platoon, antitank rifles on squad level

    Grand Battle Plan Motorized Battalion 1943-45
    845, 38 officers - AA 20mm AA guns on battalion level AT = 6prd AT-gun platoon, PIATs on squad level
    ******************************************************************
    ********************************************************************
    Superiour Firepower Infantry Battalion 1942
    916, 32 officers - AA = LMGs on battalion level AT = 37mm AT-gun platoon on battalion level

    Superiour Firepower Infantry Battalion 1943-45
    871, 35 officers AA=quad-HMGs and LMGs on battalion level AT = 57mm AT-gun platoon on battalion, Bazookas on platoon level
    ********************************************************************
    Superiour Firepower Mechanized Battalion 1942-1943
    700, 24 officers AA = HMGs, AT = 37mm AT-guns on platoon level,

    Superiour Firepower Mechanized Battalion 1944-1945
    1001, 39 officers AA = quad-HMQs AT = platoon of 105mm Shermans on battalion level, 57mm AT guns on company level, Bazookas on platoon level
    ********************************************************************
    ********************************************************************
    ********************************************************************
    Spearhead Infantry Battalion 1939-42
    861, 22 officers AA =LMGs AT = antitank rifles on company level
    +additional pioneer platoon, thrice as many mortars per battalion (6 tubes compared to French, British, Polish ech. that almost universally had only 2)

    Spearhead Infantry Battalion 1943
    708 13 officers AA=LMGs AT= Panzerfausts on squad level, Panzershrecks on company level
    +heavy mortar platoon, used only by Germans and Soviets on battalion level)

    ********************************************************************
    Spearhead Mechanized Battalion 1942
    995, 27 officers AA=MMGs AT=37mm self-propelled AT-guns on platoon level, 50mm PaK 38 platoon on battalion level

    Spearhead Mechanized Battalion 1943-44
    995, 27 officers AA=20mm platoon-level AT=as above, 75mm PaK 40 platoon replaces the 50mm

    ********************************************************************

    The way I see it, doctrine research and rest of the technology research should go hand in hand. Doctrine is the principal way of determining how the developed new weapons will be used - once the player develops a new AT-gun, for example, doctrine should dictate whether this tech will primarily improve the stats of dedicated Antitank battalions or whether is it hoing to give bonus to the line infantry battalions as well during the next major organizational reform?

    What do you think?
